World Environment Day programe demands halt to mining in Goa


Morpirla Bacheao Samiti in coordination of Goa Federation of Mines Affected Peoples (GOAMAP ) and Goenchea Xetkarancho Ekvott (GXE) celebrated World Environment Day at Morpirla on Saturday June 05, 2010.


The villagers of Morpirla first took out a rally to make the people conscious about the importance of preserving nature , which started from the Morpirla main bus stop. Rally was flagged off by the Sarpanch of Morpirla Smt. Bakti Velip (as seen in the photo) culminated into a public meeting at Panchayat Hall.


In his speech GOAMAP Convenor Seby Rodrigues stated that Mining is enemy number one of Goa which requires to be stopped completely. He further stated that mining destroys Goa Forest, mountain, underground water, rivers, air which intern causes health problems. He further stated that mining exports which started in 1948 has not benefited Goa, but it has benefited countries like Japan, China and few industrial houses in Goa.
Addressing the gathering Shanker Jog of Sancorda stated that all the mining companies operating in Goa are violating all the rules and regulation and our officials are a mute spectators. He further stated that mining is the main factor in Goa which is responsible for increasing the temperature in the recent years.

Abijit Prabhudessai in his speech stressed the need of protecting environment to a healthy and better life, and for future generations.


Advocate John Fernandes in his speech stated that Agriculture can provide sustainable development as it will feed generation together and not mining which will wind up in few decades. He appealed to those present to protect the land for their future generation which they have inherited from their forefather.

The programme was compared by Katu Velip, while Morpirla Bhachav Samiti convenor Ulhas Goankar welcomed the gather and Bhiva Velip proposed vote of thank.
