astes are the building blocks of the Indian Social Structure and a relevant factor in determining social backwardness. Census is also an important aspect of governance and policy making. The Government of India has set up a GOM (Group of Ministers) to consider the inclusion of caste in the census 2011. Since then, this issue has grabbed the headlines in the media and is being discussed hotly among the intellectuals, mediapersons, and politicians and so on. The emerging public opinion is clearly divided. This issue is particularly important for the students and the scholars of the social sciences and the humanities. Therefore UGC Centre for the Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy (CSSEIP), Goa University is organizing a debate on Inclusion of Caste in the Census of India.
